          Our big gig

My wife Dana and I had our big gig this past weekend. On Saturday 2/24, we had a recital with Dana singing and me accompanying on piano. We did an Evite, which included the following info:

Host: Dana and Chris Alexander
Location: First Congregational Church, 2000 Humboldt St, Santa Rosa, CA
When: Saturday, February 24, 4:00pm
Presented by

Dana Alexander, mezzo-soprano
Chris Alexander, piano

Featuring works of Johannes Brahms, Claude Debussy, Henri Duparc, Georges Bizet, Samuel Barber, Jason Robert Brown and George Gershwin

with special guest vocal jazz ensemble Take Note

I'd say it went pretty well overall. We had over 50 in attendance (48 replied to the Evite, and there were more attendees not on the list). We brought our camera, but forgot to use it in all the busy-ness :-(, but Jeff Wilson recorded the event, so we have an audio archive of it (for good or ill). We may do something like this again in the unforeseen future...

          Weekend at Humboldt

I spent this past weekend playing for the Northern California Honor Choir, which is made up of students from many high school choir programs from Sonoma County north toward the Oregon border. The event alternates between Humboldt State and Chico State every year. I've been accompanying the event for 5-6 years now.

The Honor Choir conductor this year was Dr. Daniel Afonso, who is from Brazil and directs vocal and choral activities at Stanislaus State. We did his arrangement of a Brazilian folk-song, "Siriri", as well as a small variety of choral works (Mendelssohn, Brahms, Pfautsch, Guastavino...)

The NorCal Honor Choir is still a bit of the poor sibling of the NorCal Honor Band, which has been around for 45 years (the choir only started about 7-8 years ago). But it has improved rapidly, especially since Gail Bowers (from Maria Carrillo HS) and my wife Dana (from Montgomery HS) have been administrating the choir for the past few years. I'm looking forward to being involved for the foreseeable future.
